In case you didn’t know, today is Earth Day, meaning yesterday was the perfect time for Vice-President Joe Biden to have announced the $452 million Energy Retrofit Ramp-Up program. Basically, the funding will be going to 25 communities across the country for the purposes of energy-saving home improvements.
Similar to Home Star, the goal of the program is to create jobs and increase energy efficiency throughout the United States of America. The actions that this retrofitting will spur may also slight reduction in the nation’s collective carbon footprint.
Vice-President Biden announcing the energy-efficient Retrofit Ramp-Up measure:
So what does this mean for you? Well, whether it’s Home Star or Retofit Ramp-Up, it means if you haven’t already scheduled a home energy audit, you’re way overdue. An energy auditor‘s assessment will give you the recommendations and direction you need in order to take advantage of Home Star, or Cash for Caulkers as some call it. Common recommendations include upgrading HVAC units, reporting of leaky ducts or poorly insulated doors and windows.
While Home Star hasn’t been passed as of yet, experts predict some form of the bill will be passed by the summer, similar to last year’s Cash for Clunkers program – a wildly successful program that stimulated the economy to an extent. Part of the allure of Home Star is that the rebate come at the point of sale, letting homeowners purchase energy-saving products at reduced amounts.
